The Music

Often cited for leaning on Aerosmith and GnR for inspiration, Sneaky James pushed that narrative aside with epic grooves, wicked lyrics and a hard rockin‘ sensibility that always made for electrifying performances.

The Back Story

Sneaky James was formed in Montreal Canada in 1987. Plan B, their one and only album was recorded two songs at a time at RCA Victor Studios and Montreal Sound between 1987-89 and released independently in 1989 on Smoking Gun Music after a couple of major* record deals fell through.

*Too ”mercurial” apparently…

Plan B (the one and only)

The Songs

With the exception of the first track, Plan B is an album largely about human affairs and the ongoing shit-show of relationships, (in)fidelity and ultimately, the extraordinary human capacity for fucking it all up.

Track 1: Watch Your Mouth

A song about censorship and raising the middle finger to “Parental Advisory” labels that made their way on to albums and CDs In the 1980’s.

Play

Track 2: Black Cat

When you’ve got a girlfriend that’s a “freak in the sheets” and “major cra” at the same time…. and now you’re in trouble.

Play

Track 3: Overload

A ripping tune about getting your rocks off. Overload was a highlight of live performances.

Play

Track 4: Wedlock Headlock

A cautionary note to all the married musicians out there…

Wedlock, headlock

get on home boy,

the ‘ol lady’s waitin’ in bed.

Keep doin’ whatcha doin’

with the girl on the floor

and ya know you’re gonna

end up dead.

Play

Track 5: Little Gina

Falling in love with a bi-sexual and not knowing if it’s a stellar joy-ride or the worst decision you've ever made.

Play

Track 6: Thunder + Rain

It’s true. Opposites attract. And sometimes it works out.

Play

Track 7: Dirty Boots

The second song the band recorded after Down Time. And yes, Saint Poppa Stones Lollypop is the place to be.

Play

Track 8: Frantic City!

Hookers and blow anyone? An ode to sex workers and the seedy underbelly of LA. What the hell, everyone needs a hug.

Play

Track 9: Down Time

The first song the band ever recorded was a riff on two-timing. It also gamed the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their “thing” before they were “a thing”.

Play

Track 10: Mean Old World

A song that could have equally been titled:

”Nothing to See Here”

Mean Old World is a grinding, beat-you-down kind of song, that finalized the album (and the band) in a bloody mess somewhere terrifically forgettable.

Loud ‘n Live

Le Spectrum, Montreal 1990. Opening for George Thorogood and the Destroyers.

Tour? What Tour?

Regulars of Montreal’s live music scene in the late 1980’s, Sneaky James toured (mostly) eastern Canada and USA headlining their own shows and as a support act.

A Head-on Hard Rock Collision

Sneaky James was a rarity among support acts, creating life-long fans from audience members who hadn’t yet heard their music, and leaving more than a few headliners wondering: “How the hell do we follow up that shit?”

“A little crazy.”

And, just before Grubsy got his concussion he was heard to say… “This looks a bit dodgy” of which Rubsy replied, “Nah, we’re alright, we’ve got insurance.”

The official “On-the-Road“ record (until proven otherwise):

0 Arrests

1 Massive head wound

1 Los Angeles earthquake

13 Girlfriends that looked the other way

73 Well respected exotic dancers

Many unhappy headliners

Nothing Lasts Forever

All in for three and a half years - then it was over.

Sneaky James would like to thank everyone who partied with us, supported us, bought an LP, cassette, ticket, or T Shirt. We were all part of something completely insane and grateful for not being shot or arrested In the process.

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Jamie was the visionary and prime mover. He did much of the heavy-lifting while leaving the players room to move the music around. His lyrics were always sharp, sarcastic and scandalous.

Greg Mark, Guitars, Lap steel Guitar

Greg (aka. Grubs, Grubsy) was a true original. His guitar playing was equal parts imagination and feel - both of which lingered in your ears well after the song was over.

Bruce Roberts, Bass Guitar, Background Vocals

James Mahaffey, Lead Vocals (and a whole lot more).

Wayne Dwyer, Guitars, Guitar Synth, Background Vocals.

Bruce (aka. Rubs, Rubsy) dialed-in a hi-fi bass sound that pushed and grooved every song solidly along. Blues, funk, rock, drop-D tuning, or leading melodic bass lines. It’s all there.

Wayne Dwyer, Guitars, Guitar Synth, Background Vocals.

Wayne (aka. Wayne Dog) contributed a mountain of vocal and guitar harmony to the band in more ways than one. An accomplished vocalist, lyricist,  guitar player, synth-guitar player, Wayne filled gaps no one knew where there.

Jimmy Ayoub, Drums and Percussion

Jimmy (aka. Jim, Jimbo) was the bands live drummer from 1989-1990.
